NewsEurope’s referral reward doubled. The UK figure did not move
In April 2026 Tesla doubled the mainland European referral reward from roughly 1,000 km of free Supercharging to about 2,000 km. The UK figure — roughly 650 miles, about 1,046 km — did not move. This is the one story on this site where the news is the referral programme, and it is also the origin of the most-copied UK referral error.
The two numbers, and why they get confused
650 miles and 2,000 km are not the same reward in different units; the mainland figure is close to twice the distance. Because UK pages are frequently rewritten from European sources, and because April 2026 gave every European page a fresh number to copy, the mainland figure has spread onto UK guides that then overstate the benefit by roughly half.
What did not change on either side of the Channel
The mechanics, which are identical in both markets and are where money is actually lost:
- The benefit attaches when the order is placed, through the link, and cannot be added afterwards.
- Charging distance expires six months from the Grant Date, against twelve months for Tesla Credits.
- An allowance cannot be transferred, cashed out, or reissued once it has expired.
- Eligibility is Model 3, Model Y and specific Cybertruck trims; Model S and Model X left the programme in March 2026.
Why the UK might sit on a different number
Nobody outside Tesla can answer that with authority and this desk will not invent a reason. What can be observed is that the UK sits outside the EU regulatory perimeter that governs the other half of the referral story — where North America's benefit is a supervised-driving trial and mainland Europe's approval timetable has its own schedule. Three markets, three answers, one programme name.
What a UK buyer should do about it
Believe the UK number and check the unit. If a page aimed at UK buyers quotes kilometres, it is quoting somebody else's market; if it quotes a flat £500 credit, it is describing an older programme; if it promises free FSD, it is describing North America. The referral link still works the same way — what changes is how much you should expect it to be worth.
The value question, answered honestly
650 miles at ordinary Model 3 or Model Y consumption is roughly 150–190 kWh, or about four to six Supercharger stops. Its cash value depends on the per-kWh price you would otherwise have paid, which varies by site and time of day and is shown in the Tesla app before you plug in. Any single pound figure you see quoted has guessed at your tariff and your driving.
The read
A doubling in one market and no movement in another is a reminder that "the Tesla referral programme" is really several market-specific programmes sharing a name. For UK readers the practical consequence is small and specific: use the UK figure, watch the six-month clock, and treat any page that mixes the two markets as unreliable on everything else too. The full comparison is in 650 miles is not 2,000 km.
