Buyers arriving from other markets often ask which government incentive stacks with a UK referral. The answer is unusually short: for a Tesla, there isn't one. What the scheme requires, and where Tesla sits
Two features of the grant matter here. It applies below a £37,000 price cap, and eligibility is conditioned on manufacturer-level environmental criteria — an SBTi-verified target being the requirement most commonly cited in reporting. Tesla is absent from the published eligible list.

Notice the shape of that list: the referral benefit is the one item that is guaranteed, immediate, and requires only that you open a link before configuring. The rest are larger and conditional.
Why UK pages get this wrong so often
Because incentive text is the most copied content in the EV space, and it ages badly. Pages describing a plug-in car grant for a Tesla are describing an earlier scheme; pages promising a grant plus a referral are stacking something that does not exist. If a page tells you a UK Tesla buyer can claim a government grant, check the eligible list yourself before believing anything else on it.
What to actually do
- Attach the referral properly — link first, configure second, read the order summary before paying. It cannot be added afterwards.
- Sort your charging tariff before delivery. This is worth multiples of the referral benefit over a year of ownership.
- If you are a company-car or salary-sacrifice buyer, get advice on the tax treatment — that is where the real money is in the UK, and it has nothing to do with referrals.
