BYD, not Tesla, is now the UK's biggest EV brand — what that does and doesn't mean for your referral
BYD leads UK EV sales in 2026. The referral scheme this site covers is unaffected — here's why.
A quiet assumption sits behind a lot of older UK Tesla-referral content: that Tesla is still, by default, "the" EV brand here. It isn't, at least not by sales. In July 2026, 43,547 battery electric vehicles were registered in the UK — up roughly 50% year on year and good for a 27.4% market share — and BYD is now the UK's largest EV brand for 2026 to date, with 12,754 sold, ahead of Tesla, Kia, BMW and Volkswagen. Worth correcting that framing before it colours how you read anything else on a Tesla-focused site, including this one.
The numbers
July 2026: 43,547 BEVs registered, a 27.4% share of new-car sales, even as the overall UK new-car market fell 5% that month. The Renault 5 was July's single most popular electric car, with Kia, VW and BYD leading monthly EV registrations. Across 2026 so far, BYD's 12,754 units make it the UK's biggest EV brand, ahead of Tesla. Sources: WhichEV's July 2026 registration analysis, BYD UK's own announcement and the SMMT's market data.
The myth this corrects
Plenty of referral-scheme content — including plenty about Tesla specifically — implicitly treats Tesla as the obvious, default EV choice, as if referral schemes were a Tesla-only feature of the market. Neither is true any more. BYD leading UK EV sales in 2026 doesn't say anything bad about Tesla's own referral scheme, but it's a useful reality check against any page that talks about "the" Tesla referral as though Tesla still dominates UK EV buying by volume. It doesn't, by registrations.
What this changes for a Tesla buyer or referrer here
Nothing about the mechanics. If you're specifically choosing a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y, the UK referral benefit — roughly 650 free Supercharging miles, applied by clicking the link before you configure — is exactly what it was before this data came out. Market-share figures for BYD, Kia or the Renault 5 have no bearing on Tesla's own referral programme; it's Tesla's scheme, running to Tesla's own rules, regardless of which brand tops the monthly sales chart.
What it does change: how you should read "biggest" claims
If you're cross-shopping and see a page claim Tesla is "the UK's best-selling EV brand", check the date. That claim has been true in the past, but as of July 2026 it no longer is — BYD holds that position this year. Treat any brand-ranking claim on any site, including a Tesla-referral site, as something to verify against a current, dated source rather than assumed.
What to actually do
If you've already decided on a Model 3 or Model Y, this changes nothing about your next step: get a referral link, click it before you configure, and confirm the benefit in your order summary. If you're still comparing brands, market-share data is one input among many — it says nothing about which car, or which referral scheme, suits your own driving.
The bottom line
BYD, not Tesla, led UK EV sales in 2026 to date. That's a real shift in the wider market and a fair correction to any page that assumes otherwise — but it has no effect on the actual mechanics of a Tesla referral for a buyer who's already chosen a Model 3 or Model Y.
