NewsTesla and the £3,750 Electric Car Grant: what a Model Y buyer actually qualifies for in 2026

If you're configuring a Model Y in 2026 and have seen headlines about a government £3,750 Electric Car Grant, the first thing to establish is whether it applies to the car you're actually buying. For Tesla, right now, it doesn't — and that changes what "what you get" actually means for a Model Y order this year.

Why Tesla misses the £3,750 grant

The Electric Car Grant's eligibility list depends on manufacturer-level commitments, including a verified Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) pledge. As of this source's check, Tesla isn't on the approved list, so there's no £3,750 knocked off a new Tesla order the way there might be on an eligible rival's equivalent model. So what does a Model Y buyer actually get in 2026?

Not the £3,750 grant — but a working referral link still gets a new Model Y buyer roughly 650 miles of free Supercharging on delivery, provided you click the link before you configure (see Step 1). We estimate that at £70–£100 in real charging on our value page, using a UK Supercharging rate around £0.45–£0.55/kWh. Worth flagging: the source behind this story quotes a lower 25–40p/kWh range instead. Both can be right at once — Supercharging pricing varies by site, time of day and local electricity costs across Tesla's now 2,747 UK chargers (as of end May 2026) — so treat either figure as a range, and check the live per-kWh rate in the Tesla app rather than relying on any single published number.

The home-charger grant most Model Y buyers overlook

Separately from Tesla or the referral scheme entirely, the UK's home-charger installation grant rose from £350 to £500 from 1 April 2026. It's brand-agnostic and tenancy-based — mainly aimed at renters and flat-dwellers without off-street parking, rather than car buyers generally — so check your own eligibility on gov.uk rather than assuming it applies just because you're buying an EV. A worked 2026 example: stacking what's actually available

Take an eligible renter ordering a Model Y in 2026, with no driveway and a genuine need for a home charger install. The Electric Car Grant contributes £0 — Tesla isn't on the list. The referral link, clicked before configuring, contributes an estimated £70–£100 in free Supercharging. The home-charger grant, if their landlord and property qualify, contributes up to £500. That's a realistic combined total of roughly £570–£600 — not from Tesla directly stacking three offers, but from three genuinely separate schemes landing on the same order. Your own total depends entirely on whether the home-charger grant applies to you; don't assume it does.

Why the exclusion could change — and how to check

Manufacturer SBTi status and grant eligibility lists aren't static; Tesla could be added in a future review. Before you order, it costs nothing to check the current list on gov.uk yourself rather than relying on this page staying current indefinitely — we'll update this post if that changes, with the date we confirmed it.

What to actually do before you order

Step one: check gov.uk's current Electric Car Grant manufacturer list — don't assume Tesla's exclusion from earlier in 2026 still holds by the time you read this. Step two: check your own eligibility for the home-charger grant if you don't have off-street parking. Step three: click your referral link before you touch the configurator. Step four: check the live per-kWh Supercharging rate in the Tesla app so your own £-value estimate is based on today's price, not ours.
