Tesla Model 3 referral code UK: a first-time buyer's guide

If this is your first Tesla — or your first electric car of any kind — the referral link is the easy part. The parts that actually trip up first-time buyers are the things nobody tells you before you open the configurator. Here's the order we'd do it in, with the referral folded in where it belongs.

Before you touch the configurator

Two things are worth sorting in your head first, because they shape which Model 3 trim makes sense — not because they affect your referral. Charging at home: if you have off-street parking, a dedicated home charger makes day-to-day charging far cheaper than relying on public rapid charging. If you don't, check whether you might qualify for the home-charger installation grant covered below before you assume you'll be charging at home at all. Insurance: get a couple of quotes before you order — EV insurance groups and premiums vary by trim, and it's better to know roughly what you're signing up for before delivery day, not after.

Step 1: get a real referral link — it costs nothing to hold one

Grab a link now, even if you're weeks away from ordering. It doesn't commit you to anything, and having it ready means you won't configure a car by accident before you've opened it. See Step 1 for the full detail on how links and codes work.

Step 2: understand there is no coupon box

This is the single biggest thing first-time buyers misunderstand. Unlike a voucher code at an online shop, Tesla's checkout has no box to type a discount code into. The referral works by you having opened the link before you start configuring — Tesla recognises it automatically and shows it in your order summary. If you configure first and look for a code box afterwards, you won't find one, and by then it's too late to add the referral to that order.

Step 3: configure, then check the order summary before you pay

Once you're in the referral session, take your time on the configurator — compare Rear-Wheel Drive, Long Range and Performance on range and price without any pressure, the referral doesn't favour one over another. Before you enter payment details, scroll the order summary and look for a line confirming the referral benefit. That's your proof it applied; if it's missing, stop, reopen the link, and start again rather than paying and hoping.

What you're actually getting: 650 free Supercharging miles

For a first-time buyer, it helps to be precise about the reward so you don't over- or under-value it. It's roughly 650 miles of free Supercharging, worth somewhere in the region of £70–£100 depending on current UK Supercharging pricing — added to your account after delivery, not as money off the car. It's a genuine, welcome extra on your first year of charging, not a discount on the purchase price.

The grants a first-time buyer should know don't apply

It's easy to assume every EV incentive going applies to your first Tesla. Two specifically don't, or only conditionally do. The government's Electric Car Grant (up to £3,750 off EVs under £37,000, live since July 2025) doesn't reach any current Model 3 trim — all three list above that price cap. Separately, a home-charger installation grant, historically worth up to around £500, is available to some renters and flat-dwellers without dedicated parking — that one depends on your housing situation, not your car, so check current eligibility on gov.uk rather than assuming your Model 3 order qualifies you for it.

A simple first-timer's checklist

1. Get quotes for insurance and think about home charging before you commit to a trim.
2. Open a referral link first — before any configuring.
3. Configure and compare trims freely; the referral doesn't change with trim.
4. Check the order summary for the referral line before you pay.
5. After delivery, check your Tesla account for the Supercharging miles, and set a reminder — Supercharging credits generally expire around 12 months after they land.

None of this is complicated once you've done it once. The whole point of ordering with a referral link the first time is that it's the one step that's easy to get wrong simply because nobody explains the sequence — now you have it.
