Model 3 and Model Y Standard, compared: what the lower price actually costs you

"Standard" sounds like a synonym for "the normal one". On Tesla's current UK range it means something more specific: the cheapest way into a Model 3 or Model Y, reached by removing real equipment rather than just badge-engineering a lower price. If you're weighing a Standard trim against ordering through a referral link, here's exactly what's different, side by side — and what stays exactly the same.

Model 3 Standard vs the trim above it

The Model 3 Standard launched in the UK on 9 January 2026 at £37,990 — £2,000 below the Rear-Wheel Drive trim it replaced. It isn't a stripped badge; specific equipment is gone:

That last row looks backwards until you remember why: less weight from the deleted kit and a milder standard powertrain both help efficiency, so the cheaper car actually posts a slightly longer WLTP range than the trim it replaced. Everything it keeps is unchanged — the panoramic glass roof, the 15.4-inch touchscreen and the full Autopilot safety hardware suite are standard across the range.

This isn't the same cut list as the US Standard

Model Y Standard, for comparison

The Model Y got the same treatment: Model Y Standard from £41,990, roughly £7,000 below the trim above it. It's single-motor rear-wheel drive rather than dual-motor, with a smaller battery giving 314 miles WLTP and a lower peak charging speed of 175kW versus the faster-charging trims above it. Styling and some interior features are pared back too, though it's a genuine trim, not a decontented afterthought.

Does either Standard still qualify for the UK referral?

Yes, unchanged. The referral benefit is tied to the model — Model 3 or Model Y — not to a specific trim or spec level. Order the cheapest Standard or the fastest Performance through a referral link, and the same roughly 650 miles of free Supercharging applies, provided the benefit shows in your order summary before you pay. Nothing in either cut list — the suspension, the seats, the peak charging rate — touches referral eligibility.

The one place a Standard's spec genuinely interacts with the benefit: a lower peak charging rate (175kW on Model Y Standard, versus faster rates on the trims above) means a Supercharging session takes a little longer to deliver the same energy. Is Standard the false economy, or the smart choice?

Neither, universally. If you never use the rear touchscreen, don't need adaptive suspension, and drive at speeds well under 110mph anyway — which describes most UK driving — the Standard's cuts may cost you nothing you'd actually use, for a genuine £2,000–£7,000 saving. If you regularly road-trip at motorway limits, want the faster charge rate, or simply prefer the fuller spec, the trim above earns its price. Either way, decide on the car you'll actually use daily, then open a referral link before you configure — the mechanics don't change with the badge on the boot.
