What a Tesla Model 3 referral is worth in the UK, trim by trim
Model 3 buyers comparing Rear-Wheel Drive, Long Range and Performance often ask the same question we covered for Model Y: does the trim you pick change what the referral is worth? The short answer is no — but the fuller answer, including how a Model 3 compares with a Model Y on this exact maths, is worth working through.
The referral value is trim-blind, same as Model Y
Order any Model 3 trim through a referral link and the buyer benefit is identical: roughly 650 miles of free Supercharging, added to your Tesla account after delivery. Rear-Wheel Drive, Long Range and Performance all qualify for the same mile allocation.
650 free miles, worked out in pounds
Tesla does not publish a cash value for the miles, so we estimate it honestly from public figures. You can redo this with today's numbers:
- A Model 3 or Model Y returns roughly 3.5–4.0 miles per kWh in mixed UK driving.
- 650 miles ÷ (3.5–4.0 mi/kWh) ≈ 163–186 kWh of charging.
- UK Supercharging is typically around £0.45–£0.55 per kWh (varies by site and time — check the live rate).
- 163–186 kWh × £0.45–£0.55 ≈ £73–£102.
So the referral is worth roughly £70–£100 in real-world charging. That is an estimate, not a Tesla-stated figure — efficiency, tariff and Supercharger pricing all move it. Re-check the per-kWh rate on Tesla's UK Supercharging page before you rely on a number.
Where Model 3 and Model Y actually differ
The maths above uses a shared 3.5–4.0 miles-per-kWh range because it covers both cars honestly — but within that range, Model 3 tends to sit toward the more efficient end. Tesla has long publicised Model 3's low drag coefficient and smaller frontal area compared with the taller Model Y, and that generally shows up as slightly better real-world efficiency. Practically, that means the same 650-mile allocation can resolve to marginally less charging cost for a Model 3 owner than a Model Y owner — both still land in our £70–£100 estimate, but a Model 3 sits closer to the top of it. Check the live efficiency figures for your exact trim on Tesla's configurator rather than treating this as a fixed number.
The three Model 3 trims, side by side
- Rear-Wheel Drive: the most efficient of the three, so the 650 miles goes marginally further here than in either other trim.
- Long Range: a small efficiency cost from the second motor and added weight, but still close to Rear-Wheel Drive in practice.
- Performance: the least efficient of the three thanks to the extra power and larger wheels — the same 650 miles converts to the fewest real-world miles of the three, though the gap next to the £70–£100 estimate is modest.
What doesn't change: the grants you're not getting
Whichever trim you choose, the government's Electric Car Grant (up to £3,750, live since July 2025) doesn't currently reach the Model 3 line-up — all three trims list above the scheme's £37,000 price cap. A separate home-charger installation grant, worth up to around £500, is unrelated to the car you buy: it depends on your tenancy and property, mainly renters and flat-dwellers without off-street parking, so check current eligibility on gov.uk rather than assuming it applies.
Model 3 vs Model Y: does either come out ahead?
Not by design — Tesla applies the same 650-mile allocation to both. In practice, Model 3's slightly better efficiency across its range means the referral's real-world value edges marginally higher for a Model 3 than for a Model Y, all else being equal. It's a small effect, not a reason to choose one car over the other — the difference in body style, boot space and ride height between the two matters far more to most buyers than a few pounds of Supercharging cost.
How to redo this maths yourself
Don't take our £70–£100 figure as fixed. Check Tesla's current UK Supercharging per-kWh rate, check the efficiency figure for your specific Model 3 trim on the live configurator, and multiply through: 650 miles divided by your trim's miles-per-kWh gives the kWh, then multiply by the current per-kWh rate. Both numbers move during the year, so recompute close to when you actually order.
