What a Model Y referral is worth, trim by trim, in the UK
If you're weighing Rear-Wheel Drive against Long Range or Performance, it helps to know upfront: the referral benefit itself doesn't move with trim. What changes is how that benefit sits alongside the wider 2026 UK incentive picture — worth knowing what you're not getting, as well as what you are.
The referral value is trim-blind
Order any Model Y trim through a referral link and the buyer benefit is the same: roughly 650 miles of free Supercharging, added to your Tesla account after delivery.
650 free miles, worked out in pounds
Tesla does not publish a cash value for the miles, so we estimate it honestly from public figures. You can redo this with today's numbers:
- A Model 3 or Model Y returns roughly 3.5–4.0 miles per kWh in mixed UK driving.
- 650 miles ÷ (3.5–4.0 mi/kWh) ≈ 163–186 kWh of charging.
- UK Supercharging is typically around £0.45–£0.55 per kWh (varies by site and time — check the live rate).
- 163–186 kWh × £0.45–£0.55 ≈ £73–£102.
So the referral is worth roughly £70–£100 in real-world charging. That is an estimate, not a Tesla-stated figure — efficiency, tariff and Supercharger pricing all move it. Re-check the per-kWh rate on Tesla's UK Supercharging page before you rely on a number.
That maths doesn't change whether you drive away in the entry RWD or the range-topping Performance — the mile allocation is fixed per qualifying model, not scaled to the price you paid.
What you don't get, at any trim: the Electric Car Grant
The government's Electric Car Grant, live since July 2025, knocks up to £3,750 off new EVs priced under £37,000. Every current Model Y trim lists above that threshold, so RWD, Long Range and Performance are excluded equally. Choosing the cheapest trim doesn't bring you under the cap — the referral's Supercharging miles are the incentive on offer here, not a Car Grant discount.
What you might still get, at any trim: the home-charger grant
Separately, a home chargepoint installation grant — historically worth up to around £500 — has remained available to some UK households, mainly renters and flat-dwellers without dedicated off-street parking. It depends on your tenancy and property, not on which Tesla or which trim you buy, so check current eligibility and amounts on gov.uk before assuming it applies to you.
The three trims, side by side
- Rear-Wheel Drive: referral ≈ £70–£100 in Supercharging; Car Grant £0 (excluded); home-charger grant — depends on your tenancy, not the trim.
- Long Range: same referral value; same Car Grant exclusion; same home-charger eligibility rules.
- Performance: same referral value again, though slightly lower real-world efficiency means the miles stretch marginally less far than on Long Range.
Your trim choice changes the price of the car and its running costs. It doesn't change which of these three incentives you're eligible for.
The one thing that does change with trim
Performance's extra power costs a little efficiency, so the same 650 miles convert to marginally fewer real-world miles driven compared with a Long Range in identical conditions. It's a small effect next to the headline £70–£100 value — not a reason to pick a trim on referral maths alone.

How to redo this maths yourself
Don't take the £70–£100 figure as fixed. Check Tesla's current UK Supercharging per-kWh rate, check the efficiency figure for your specific trim on the live configurator, and multiply through: 650 miles divided by your trim's miles-per-kWh gives the kWh, then multiply by the current per-kWh rate. Prices and efficiency estimates both move during the year, so a number you calculate today can drift by the time you actually order.
