Model Y referral code UK: when to lock your trim before you click the link

Buyers agonise over Model Y trims — Rear-Wheel Drive, Long Range or Performance — for days, flipping the configurator back and forth right up to the last click. Then, almost as an afterthought, they open the referral link. That order is backwards, and it's the part that can actually cost you the benefit.

The rule that matters more than which trim you pick

Whichever Model Y trim you eventually choose, the UK referral mechanics don't change: open a referral link before you configure and pay. The benefit is recognised in your order summary before payment, and it cannot be added once the order is placed. Trim choice has no bearing on that rule — get the timing right first, then take as long as you like comparing trims.

A sensible timing sequence

1. Shortlist your trim in your head first. Read up on Rear-Wheel Drive vs Long Range vs Performance range and price before you touch the Tesla configurator.
2. Open a referral link in a fresh session. This is what starts the referral tracking — do it before any configuring, on whichever device you'll actually order from.
3. Configure inside that same session. Switch between trims as many times as you like; the link stays applied while you're comparing.
4. Reopen the link if you switch device or return days later. A new session on a new phone or laptop doesn't carry the referral over automatically.
5. Check the order summary before you pay, whichever trim you land on. No referral line, no benefit — go back and reopen the link.

A worked July 2026 timeline

Here's a realistic sequence we see UK buyers go through. Monday: open a referral link on a phone, start configuring a Long Range Model Y. Wednesday: switch to Performance to compare acceleration and price. Thursday: switch back to Long Range, then close the tab to sleep on it. Saturday: reopen the configurator on a laptop to finish the order.

The trim indecision itself is harmless. The risk is entirely in that last step — moving to a different device on Saturday. If Saturday's session didn't start from the referral link, the benefit isn't applied, no matter how carefully the trim was chosen earlier in the week.

Why the trim you pick doesn't change the benefit

The 650 free Supercharging miles apply the same way regardless of which Model Y trim you choose — Rear-Wheel Drive, Long Range and Performance all qualify for the identical mile allocation once you've ordered through a referral link. Trim affects the car's price and performance, not your referral eligibility.

It's also worth knowing that the UK government's Electric Car Grant, introduced in July 2025, offers up to £3,750 off new EVs priced under £37,000 — every current Model Y trim lists above that cap, so none of them qualify, whichever you choose. The referral's Supercharging miles are the incentive Tesla buyers actually get here; the Car Grant isn't part of the picture for this car.

What does vary by trim

Real-world efficiency differs a little by trim — Performance tends to use slightly more energy per mile than Long Range or RWD in mixed UK driving. That means the same 650-mile allocation stretches marginally further in a Long Range than in a Performance, even though the mile count on your account is identical. Two mistakes that trip people up

• Configuring on a work laptop, ordering from a personal phone. If the two don't share a browser session and you didn't reopen the link on the phone, the referral doesn't carry over.
• Waiting for a "final" trim decision before opening any link. There's no reason to wait — opening the link costs nothing and doesn't commit you to any trim, or to ordering at all.

Pick the trim that suits your budget and your commute. Get the timing of the referral link right regardless — that's the part that's genuinely easy to get wrong.
