UK Tesla Referral

NewsTesla is absent from the Electric Car Grant eligible list

Published eligibility lists for the UK's Electric Car Grant do not include Tesla. The scheme applies below a £37,000 price cap and conditions eligibility on manufacturer-level environmental criteria — an SBTi-verified target being the requirement most commonly cited in reporting. This dispatch records the position and its consequence rather than speculating about the reasons.

Why a UK referral page has to cover a grant scheme at all

Because incentive stacking is the single most-copied claim in EV content, and it is where UK referral pages most often go wrong. A page telling a UK buyer to combine a government grant with a referral benefit is describing something unavailable — and a reader who believes it will size their budget around money that is not coming.

The consequence for a UK buyer

With no grant available on a Tesla, the referral benefit — roughly 650 free Supercharging miles on a new Model 3 or Model Y — becomes the only structured manufacturer-side saving a UK buyer can attach to a new order. That does not make it large. It makes it the entire list, which is a different reason to take it seriously: there is nothing else to remember to claim.

What the referral benefit still cannot do

Reduce the price. It is charging distance credited to an account, not money off the invoice, so it does not move the purchase price, the amount financed, or any figure a price cap is measured against. It cannot pull a configuration under the £37,000 cap, and it cannot push one over it. For a scheme Tesla is not on, that is academic — but the same asymmetry matters in every market that caps a grant by transaction value.

The comparison with mainland Europe

Two things differ across the Channel and both cut the same way. Several mainland markets run live purchase incentives, and the mainland referral reward was doubled to roughly 2,000 km in April 2026 while the UK figure did not move. A UK buyer therefore has the smaller referral reward and no grant, which is worth knowing precisely because so much UK-facing content is rewritten from European sources.

What UK buyers do have

Levers that matter more than the referral, and that have nothing to do with it: company-car tax treatment for salary-sacrifice and business users, home-charging tariffs that make overnight electricity far cheaper than public rapid charging, and Tesla's own periodic finance or pricing offers, whose own terms decide whether they combine with anything else.

The shape of that list is the useful part. The referral benefit is the only item that is guaranteed, immediate, and requires nothing more than opening a link before configuring. The larger items are all conditional on your circumstances.

How to check this yourself

Read the current published eligible-vehicle list for the scheme rather than any summary of it, including this one. Grant schemes change eligibility on their own timetable, and a manufacturer absent today is not necessarily absent next year — which is exactly why this dispatch is dated and why a UK referral page that quotes an incentive without a date should be treated as unusable.

The read

No grant, one referral benefit, and a set of ordinary financial decisions that dwarf both. Attach the referral because it is free and immediate; do not let any page persuade you it is stacking with a scheme that does not list Tesla.
