NewsTesla's March 2026 referral shake-up: what it does (and doesn't) change for UK buyers

In March 2026 Tesla rewrote the rules of its referral and loyalty programme. The headline numbers — a flat $250 referrer credit, a loyalty discount halved from $1,000 to $500, Model S and Model X dropped from the referral-eligible line-up — are all US-market figures. None of them is the UK's 650-mile Supercharging benefit. But the rewrite is still worth reading closely here, because two details in it say something real about how tightly Tesla now runs this scheme worldwide, including in the UK.

What actually changed (the US version)

Why none of the dollar figures apply directly here

The UK new-car referral benefit has never been a dollar credit. It's roughly 650 miles of free Supercharging, added to the buyer's account after delivery — worth an estimated £70–£100 once you work through the maths (see our full UK benefit breakdown). Tesla's "$250 or local equivalent" line for referrers hasn't, as far as we can find, been translated into an official GBP figure. Don't take a US-dollar number, run it through today's exchange rate, and assume that's what a UK referrer will actually see in their account — check the Tesla app instead of doing the maths yourself.

The one number that probably does transfer: the 12-month clock

Before March 2026, the "credits expire after about a year" line on UK Tesla-referral sites (including earlier versions of this one) was always caveated as a re-verify item, because Tesla hadn't stated it in so many words. The March overhaul removes some of that ambiguity: Tesla now explicitly ties expiry to 12 months from the Grant Date — the date the credit actually posts to your account, which typically follows shortly after delivery rather than being the same calendar day. If you're a UK owner sitting on Supercharging miles from a referral, that's the clock to track. We cover the practical checklist for this separately.

The Model S/X removal — a preview worth watching

This site has flagged Model S and Model X UK/EU referral eligibility as "in flux" for a while, without a firm answer either way. The US decision to drop S/X from the referral scheme entirely doesn't confirm what happens in the UK — Tesla runs regional programmes separately — but it's the clearest signal yet of the direction of travel. If you're ordering a Model S or Model X in the UK expecting a referral benefit, don't assume one applies; check at the point of order rather than relying on older guidance, including ours.

What UK buyers and referrers should actually do

Step one: if you're sharing your referral link with a friend, don't quote them a "$250 credit" — that's a US number and not what you're likely to see in a UK account. Step two: if you already have Supercharging miles sitting in your account from a past referral, find the date they were granted and work out your own 12-month deadline rather than guessing. Step three: if you're ordering a Model 3 or Model Y now, none of this changes the mechanics — click the referral link first, configure, and confirm the 650-mile benefit line in your order summary before you pay.

The bottom line for the UK

Tesla's March 2026 rewrite is a US-programme story wearing a global-sounding headline. The actual UK benefit — 650 free Supercharging miles for a new Model 3 or Model Y, applied before you pay — hasn't changed. What has changed is how precisely Tesla now states its expiry rule, which is useful confirmation even for a market the rewrite doesn't directly touch.
