These are the trim-specific questions we hear most from UK buyers weighing up a Model 3 — separate from the general scheme questions already answered on our FAQ page.
Does Model 3 trim affect the referral benefit?
No. Rear-Wheel Drive, Long Range and Performance all earn the same roughly 650 free Supercharging miles when ordered through a referral link. The reward is fixed per qualifying model, not scaled to trim or price.
Can I switch trims after opening my referral link?
Yes — switch freely within the same session. The link stays applied while you compare Rear-Wheel Drive against Long Range or Performance. What breaks the referral is starting a fresh, un-linked session later (a different device, or the same device days afterwards) without reopening the link first.
Does a pricier trim mean a bigger referral reward?
No. Unlike a percentage-off discount, Tesla's referral reward is a fixed mile allocation per qualifying model. Paying more for Performance doesn't increase it, and choosing the cheapest Rear-Wheel Drive doesn't reduce it.
Will my trim choice affect whether I get the Electric Car Grant?
No. Every current Model 3 trim lists above the £37,000 price cap for the government's Electric Car Grant (up to £3,750, live since July 2025), so all three are excluded equally. Trim choice doesn't bring any of them under the threshold.
Does the home-charger grant depend on which Model 3 I buy?
No. That scheme is about your home and tenancy situation — mainly available to renters and flat-dwellers without dedicated parking, worth up to around £500 historically — not about the car or trim you order. Check current eligibility on gov.uk rather than assuming it applies.
Which trim should I pick if I mainly care about the referral?
It genuinely doesn't matter for the referral itself — pick based on range, price and how the car drives, covered in our 2026 trim explainer. The referral is the same add-on whichever Model 3 you choose; only the timing of opening the link, covered in our timing guide, is worth getting right.
I already started configuring without a link — can I fix it?
Only if you haven't paid yet. Close the configurator, open a referral link, then start again from there — your trim choice carries no penalty, but the un-linked session does need to be abandoned rather than continued. Once an order is placed without a link, it can't be retrofitted.
Does switching from Model 3 to Model Y mid-session keep the referral?
Yes, as long as you're still inside the session that started from the referral link. The link applies to your Tesla account for that ordering session, not to one specific model — you can compare a Model 3 against a Model Y under the same link, provided you haven't already placed an order.
Is there a trim where the wider grant landscape works out better?
No. The Electric Car Grant exclusion and the home-charger grant's tenancy-based eligibility both sit entirely outside the car itself, so no Model 3 trim gets you closer to qualifying for either. The referral's Supercharging miles remain the one incentive tied directly to your Tesla order.
Could the referral amount change before I order?
Yes — UK referral terms have changed before and can change again, independently of any trim decision. Re-check the current figure against the source list below, or on tesla.com/en_gb directly, before you rely on any number quoted here.
